Essay on LAndscape OF Death
Essay on LAndscape OF Death Essay on LAndscape OF Death Harris 1 Sidney Harris Professor Shirley Brownlee ENGL 202 November 13, 2014 Margaret Atwood: ââ¬Å"Death By Landscapeâ⬠Losing someone or something you love or care deeply about is very painful. You may experience all kinds of difficult emotions and it may feel like the pain and sadness you're experiencing will never let up. These are normal reactions to a significant loss. But while there is no right or wrong way to grieve, there are healthy ways to cope with the pain. The character Lois in the story ââ¬Å"Death by Landscapeâ⬠, written by Margaret Atwood, exhibits grief and how it has an effect on life. As people often do, Loisââ¬â¢s life is affected by an event in her past that disturbs her. During her childhood years, Lois was traumatized when her best friend Lucy went missing and was blamed for it. Even though it is evident that Lois did not kill Lucy, a sense of guilt from Lucyââ¬â¢s mysterious death disturbs her psyche; she felt as if she could have stopped it from happening. Lois ââ¬Å"was living not one life but two: her own, and another, shadowy life that hovered around her and would not let itself be realizedâ⬠. The guilt tears her apart on the inside and sends her into a depression, even neglecting her family from her thoughts, seeming to isolate herself form everyone. Lois had a very difficult time dealing with this. In Janis DiCiaccoââ¬â¢s book ââ¬Å"The Colors Harris 2 of Grief : Understanding a Child's Journey Through Loss From Birth to Adulthoodâ⬠she wrote ââ¬Å"Grief is a long and difficult journey during the years a child is growing up. The goal of this journey- to heal the deep griefâ⬠. This is evidence that shows how difficult it is for a child to deal with grief. When people pass they create memorials, or something to remember the person by. Lois keeps landscape paintings in her house, but not for love of the art, but because they remind her of the landscape her friend went missing. Atwood writes, ââ¬Å"She looks at the paintings, she looks into them. Every one of them is a picture of Lucy. You canââ¬â¢t see her exactly, but sheââ¬â¢s thereâ⬠. The paintings shows as a way for her dealing with her thoughts, the paintings do not bring her happiness. Atwood writes, ââ¬Å"She does not find them peaceful in the least. Looking at them fills her with a wordless uneaseâ⬠. Lois feels that she should keep the memory up of her friend because she feels guilty. Although this is painful it is also helpful to her getting over her grief. This is evident in ââ¬Å"Dying, Death, and Grief : Working with Adult Bereavementâ⬠by Mallon, Brenda. When to referring to Sigmund Freudââ¬â¢s work in her book, she wrote ââ¬Å"He believed the b ereaved person has to work through his grief by reviewing thoughts and memories of the deceased. By this process, painful as it is, the bereaved can achieve detachment from the loved one and the bereavedââ¬â¢s bonds with the deceased become looserâ⬠. This supports that Loisââ¬â¢s paintings were actually helping her deal with her grief. Throughout the story, we can clearly see how nature is presented as a negative role in Loisââ¬â¢ life. Her grief was shown throughout the story, with her assumption that there was something more to her paintings. Atwood gave an abstract idea of why Lois chose these Harris 3 paintings, with describing each scene of the wilderness. Atwood wrote ââ¬Å"There are no backgrounds in any of these paintings, no vistas; only a great deal of foreground that goes back and back, endlessly involving you in its twists and turns of tree and branch and rock. No matter how far back in you go, there

The top 6 recruitment marketing tactics guaranteed to attract top talent
The top 6 recruitment marketing tactics guaranteed to attract top talent Recruitment marketing is a broad-based strategy that combines employer branding and time-tested marketing strategies with social media and technology to attract top talent to organizations. Often this type of marketing falls under the umbrella of the talent acquisition team- not simply to advertise a single job, but to also think bigger and attract talented candidates by increasing awareness of available jobs and improving how candidates view a company and its brand. Successful recruitment marketing can lead to better quality candidates and, in turn, better success for an organization overall.Chances are your organization already engages in some aspects of recruitment marketing, like posting on career sites or via social recruiting. Your companyââ¬â¢s website likely even communicates its brand to prospective candidates for hire and clients. But recruitment marketing, as a forward-looking strategy, attempts to lay the groundwork for future hires by attracting talented candidates to the company before a particular job opens up. According to a survey conducted by Pandologic, ââ¬Å"The State of Recruitment Marketing 2018,â⬠top recruitment marketing performers take it one step further in two key areas: candidate engagement and use of a technology platform for recruitment marketing. So how can you turn your recruitment marketing from good to great?Cultivate a talent networkFirst and foremost, cultivate a talent network: a pool of talented candidates that may not actively be seeking jobs but will be potential leads for the next job you need to fill. Doing so will benefit your company and talent acquisition team by reducing time to hire.Hire internally whenever possibleLook at home whenever possible to cultivate talent from within. Nurturing talent within an organization has a dual benefit. Not only do you hire a known quantity and tested talent, but the practice also benefits the employer brand. A company that offers mobility within the organization and has a good retention rate of employees who fulfill their careers sends a good message to future job candidates and can be integral to both the brand and the workplace environment.hbspt.cta.load(2785852, '9e52c197-5b5b-45e6-af34-d56403f973c5', {});Engage candidates at each step of the hiring processThe key to better candidate engagement is personalization. That can entail tactics like ââ¬Å"email lead nurturing,â⬠which involves marketing the company to potential job candidates through targeted emails, or it can involve ââ¬Å"career site personalization,â⬠which targets specific groups of talent by understanding where and how a certain segment of job seekers actually search for jobs.More sophisticated than blanket posting on job sites, personalization requires a better understanding of specific groups of talent. For example, where and how do engineers look for jobs vs. where and how do truckers look for jobs? The answers for every group will be slightly different, and engaging a particular group will require some marketing analytics and even artificial intelligence. There are even sophisticated forms of technology like chatbots that can help engage candidates by answering questions or scheduling interviews as they advance through the hiring process.Use social media strategicallySocial recruiting is vital to recruitment marketing, as most candidates engage daily with social media. This is especially true as Millennials enter the workforce and become a prime demographic of jobseekers. Social media profiles and blogs can help you find the right talent for specific jobs, and can also provide an excellent source for targeted advertising for the right candidates.Turn to tech to streamline your jobMany aspects listed above require the use of tech and analytics in order to be truly effective. Technology platforms that incorporate a variety of these aspects into one comprehensive strategy can automate processes and create more effective targeted ads and contacts through job board distribution and social recruiting all while developing and responding to marketing analytics. Find the right tech that will most benefit your organization.Pay attention to your dataWhile itââ¬â¢s best to take a comprehensive approach and employ multiple recruitment marketing tactics, itââ¬â¢s also important to test out your weak spots, examine where your recruitment strategies could do better, and continue examining the effectiveness of your recruitment marketing. Looking at the data as a whole with a careful eye will help lead you to more effective hires in the future.

Fire Control Project Overview Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2750 words
Fire Control Project Overview - Essay Example This project arose from a report which the government commissioned having been raised by the management, engineering as well as development consultancy which was published in April 2000. The conclusion from the report was that maximum efficiency could be attained if the number of control rooms could be reduced from current 46 (as at that time) to only 9 regional control rooms. The objective of the project being to ensure community safety by providing strategic framework for the Fire and Rescue services (FRSs) as well as other agencies which would prevent and respond to emergencies as they arose. The benefits that would accrue from the project were increased resilience. In this case by using the resilient networked technology, staff in any RCC would be able to answer calls within any part of the country. Secondly, the project would integrate all services by use of new risk management tools which had the ability to deploy specialist equipments. This would necessitate introduction of a common call handling, process mobilization, technology and training which would guarantee consistency across various regions. The communication system would also be changed to be data based rather that voice which would be readily accessible through the MDTs. This would hence ensure greater fire and rescue services capabilities (Great 2010, p.30). Extent of Failure Originally, each FRS had its own local control room charged with the responsibility of handling its own emergencies. All the 46 control rooms were independent with each using different levels of technology, network capacities and also their own back-up arrangements. The challenge faced by the control rooms was the increased number of calls and levels that exceeded the local control room. This made the calls be transferred to a different FRS or police control room. By using the police control room, information would then be sent back to the local control room using telephone, radio or fax machine. Due to the fact that different control rooms employed different technology levels and variable quality, this made the transfer process difficult for the FRSs to effectively back each other up. This resulted to the local control rooms being flooded hence being hard to cope using the current technology to handle the high volume of calls which then resulted in long queues or even lost calls. This was another example of a Government IT project in which it was absorbing increasing resources but never achieving the objectives initially set. The essential checks and balances done at the early stages of the project were ineffect ive. This was due to the fact that approval of the project was done based on unrealistic cost estimates as well as under-appreciation of the IT complexity that was to be involved. This made the project be implemented in a hurry with poor management. The Communities and Local Government Select Committee after closely examining the project hope that the project should go live by mid-2011 if there is an agreement on a viable project plan. The realization of the above has been put on substantial risk as a result of the following. Reasons for failure Project Environment There are several issues that ultimately led to the downfall of the said project which if they had been handled before would have made the project a complete success and be completed on time. Failure by the Department to sufficiently incentivize Fire and Rescue Services The Fire and Rescue authorities were under no legal obligation to use the regional control centers once completed. Despite this, the department failed in its mandate by not communicating the benefits to be accrued by transferring to the regional structure. The Department charged with the

A critical review of the role of ICT in the teaching of English and Essay
A critical review of the role of ICT in the teaching of English and mathematics - Essay Example Consequently, the article examines how game formats influence the teaching of mathematics within educational websites (Scanlon et al., 2005). There has been a shift in mathematics calculations that emphasizes mathematics in context contrary to the traditional aspect of abstract calculations. From this perspective, it is also believed that teaching mathematics in context proves to be more motivating. The authors argued that despite presenting real-world variables, traditional approaches towards mathematics do not consider such variables in the process of responding to questions. This qualifies the use of ICT, which according to the authors, incorporates considerable potential in the process of teaching mathematics in context (Buckingham and Scanlon, 2004). Application of computer games such as Gridclub utilises practical and real life examples in mathematics exercises. The technology accompanies the process with background sound mechanisms that describe the surround environment as well as actions. This is contrary to written text that ignores the aspect of human nature in real situations. In this case, application of ICT a ppears deliberate in setting mathematics within realistic context and it provides captivating context in the learning process (Scanlon et al., 2005). In my opinion, mathematics is the application of the conceptual ideas of science. In this case, science is represented by theories that explain in words the characteristics of a particular scenario. Therefore, the use of computer games promotes learning of mathematics amongst children owing to motivating factors behind the process. This is because mathematics in context brings the technical aspect of any learning, therefore breaking the monotony of the theoretical aspect. Therefore, in one way or another both concepts are necessary for effective learning to take place. Scanlon and

Socrates Last Error Essay -- Philosophy Papers
Socrates' Last Error In the dialogue, Crito, Socrates justified his decision to accept his death penalty. His decision was praised as principled and just. However, such a view was one of the greatest myths in the history of philosophy. Contrary to the accepted ideas, I wish to show that Socratesââ¬â¢ argument was erroneous, the crucial error being his failure to distinguish between substantial and procedural justice. In fact, the whole of the Crito refers to some deeper problems of the philosophy of law and morality. The dialogue "Crito" recounts Socrates' last days, immediately before his execution. As the text reveals, his friend Crito proposes to Socrates that he escape from prison. In a dialogue with Crito, Socrates considers the proposal, trying to establish whether an act like that would be just and morally justified. Eventually, he came to argue that by rejecting his sentence and by trying to escape from prison he would commit unjust and morally unjustified acts. Therefore, he decided to accept his death penalty and execution. Because of his decision, he became one of the cult figures in the history of philosophy, a man of intact moral integrity who had made his final decision according to the very same principles that guided his entire life. He was praised as a grand rationalist who had acted rationally and justlyââ¬âa view which, I believe, represents one of the greatest myths in the history of philosophy. Contrary to this widely accepted myth, I will try to demonstrate that Socrates' argument was erroneous, which made his decision less rational. In fact, had he decided to escape, his behavior would not have represented an unjust act. Although his argumentation and dialogue with Crito seem more like a moral sermon, his ... ... of Law and State, p. 113. (2) Hart, The Concept of Law, p. 203. Personal Reflection On Self - 1635 Words
Throughout the past year, Iââ¬â¢ve built many relationships that have allowed me to reflect on not only myself, but also the work I want to do and what my role can be in that work. These relationships have occurred with my peers, upperclassmen Civic Scholars, the community partner I worked work with, the students I worked with, and Civic House staff. First, my relationships with my peers have made a big impact on me. Prior to PennCORP and the Civic Scholars program, I never had the opportunity to be in a room with like-minded individuals who were passionate about social change and how they wanted to enact it. This type of space in itself drastically changed how I looked at myself, reflected on my identity, and how I wanted to go about theâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦Now I know this is where taking resources that are offered to you is most critical (and Iââ¬â¢m still working on that!) Iââ¬â¢ve learned that people, or more specifically your friends, are there for you to depend on, to take care of you, and to stick it out with. This seems like a very basic lesson, but one I had never been taught before and it has strengthened my relationship building skills. Iââ¬â¢ve learned that vulnerability is so key in building a relationship and allowing people to become invested in you by exploring those vulnerabilities and helping you work through and repair them, together. Iââ¬â¢ve learned that itââ¬â¢s okay to have to depend on each other, because thatââ¬â¢s what the relationship is, because you can have all the mutual interests in the world, but youââ¬â¢ll never build a proper relationship without organic exchange. This translates to more than just people too, it applies in terms of thinking about the work I do. Even if an organization holds all the principles you hold close to you, if you donââ¬â¢t think about the relationship beyond transactional terms, it isnââ¬â¢t a beneficial one for either you or the organization or itââ¬â¢s constituents. Itââ¬â¢s not until you partner with that organization and give them a stake in your own development that it becomes a worthwhile endeavorââ¬âor at least thatââ¬â¢s how Iââ¬â¢ve come to define it.
